Wednesday was back to tour time. The goal for the day was
to get halfway across Colorado to Gunnision, which we did via a drive over
Grand Mesa. The Mesa was by far grander than the Junction, averaging an
altitude of 10,000 feet and covering hundreds of square miles with almost
as many small lakes. Being a native Californian, I expected the mesa to be
barren of trees at that altitude, but in Colorado the treeline is around
12,000 feet. The mesa was beautiful, covered with trees and in full bloom
with mountain wildflowers. We stopped a few times to look at the views, and
had lunch alongside a lake. Shane went swimming again while Kevin and I tried
our luck (unsucessfully) at catching some fish.
Shane romping through the wildflowers. Island Lake is behind him.
