Gunnison

Gunnison is about halfway across Colorado on the southern part of the state. It's a quaint small western town with a KOA campground in it. KOA is a big chain of RV and tent campgrounds. Excuse me, kampgrounds. Kampgrounds Of America has decided to use the letter K everywhere (except in AmeriCa, of kourse, and in words where the c is an s, like in cirkus, or in the ch sound). Anyway, we stayed at the KOA which was a very short bike ride from the Gunnison River, which is why I chose it.

The Gunnison River is one of the best fly fishing rivers in the US, and even though we were just passing through we needed to give it a shot.

Kevin and I rode over in the evening without much time and even less luck. We were nymph fishing (those are flys that bounce along the bottom, as opposed to dry flies that float on top). The next morning though, we were on the river from 7am to 8am and had a great time fishing with dry flies.

Kevin Flyfishing
Kevin has always loved fishing and has been looking forward to learning to flyfish. He was the master of the rod for most of the morning and is getting the hang of casting a fly. He had a couple come after his fly, but unfortunately didn't hook up.

The bridge in the background is the highway - you don't need to go too far off the beaten, or paved, path to get to some nice water.
Carl with a fish
I was wearing wading boots, so getting deeper into the river wasn't a problem. The faster water is where the big guys were hanging out. I caught three, the brown trout on the left was on my fourth cast. Below is a better shot of both me and the fish.

We released all the fish, so this guy is still there if you want to have a try.
A nice brown
The true secret to successful fishing is very subtle: always use a reel named after the river you are fishing on.
