The Air Force Academy was the highlight of the day, but
first I need to share the Garden of the Gods Campground with you, as it
has been the most unique campground yet.
The writeups about it and the website describe it as a great family
campground with lots of amenities. I had no idea. We pulled in after the
Cog Railroad to the most active place we have seen on the entire trip -
it felt like spring break for the RV'n crowd. There was an outdoor snack
bar with frozen drinks and a line, a packed swimming pool, a huge video
arcade with three pool tables, and a separate building that was the rec
center. The rec center is an aluminum building with three garage roll-up
doors on each side filled with picnic tables and a stage area.
After we checked in a guy in a golfcart came to escort us to our campsite.
I understood why afterwards - this was the most densely packed campground
we have seen. There is just enough room next to your RV for a picnic table
before the side of the next RV. They are also packed back to back, but
staggered so that your picnic table space has a third side defined by the
back of another RV.
This picture doesn't really show it well, as
it was taken the next morning after many of the other motorhomes had left.
We also saw there the largest rigs we have seen, huge busses that make
the Ford Explorers they are towing look like Tonka Toys.
There were people
everywhere. Sarah described it best when she
said it felt like we moved into an apartment building.
The funniest part, though, was the Loma reunion that was going on. I
have no idea who or what Loma is, but there were a lot of them and they
had a great time reunioning at an RV park. In the evening they had a drunk
kareoke contest. I think it was just billed as a kareoke contest, though.
Kevin and I went over around 9:15pm and enjoyed listening to great renditions
of Margaritaville (everyone sing along!), Like a Virgin (three non-drunk
high school boys singing falsetto) and the Dixie Chicks' classic Goodbye
Earl (by five really toasted women with proper Goodbye Earl attitude, I
was concerned for their husbands). They finished right at 10pm when quite
hour begins. God Bless the Garden of the Gods.
We were awakened the next morning when the owner of the trailer next
to us fired up his fifth wheel diesel rig right outside our window at 6am.
Good morning, time to go.
