Salinas Air Show

We hit the Salinas Air Show again this year. The Blue Angels closed the show - it's always exciting to see them. Also present were some great vintage planes, like the P-51 Mustang, wingwalkers, the A10 Warthog (my favorite) and of course Robosaurus eating up some cars. You can see the full set on Flickr. [...]

Fresh Potato Chips

Slice, fry and eat. Making potato chips for dinner at my sister's ranch. Most of them didn't make it to the dinner table - a sad casualty of having five people standing around while they're being cooked. Potatoes, peanut oil and sea salt.

Shrew Visitor

Shrew Visitor This tiny shrew came into the house this afternoon. We weren't sure what it was (mouse? mole?), but easily caught it in a tupperware container. I took him outside, added some dirt and had a quick photoshoot before releasing him in the far end of the back yard. I've since learned he's a [...]

Why I Shoot in RAW

Ever since I started shooting images seriously for my A Picture A Day project in 2007, I've been shooting in RAW format. RAW saves all the image data the camera collects with minimal processing, as opposed to jpeg which applies color correction, sharpening and image compression to create a final image. By shooting RAW I [...]

California Academy of Sciences – Another Trip

Charity Valley Flowers

A number of us from Stanford Sierra Camp went on a nature hike in Charity Valley. The timing worked out great, the hills seemed to be in full bloom. I spent the first half of the hike squatting to take pictures then running to catch up, but I think it was worth it. Asters Larkspur [...]

Fallen Leaf Lake, Part 1

A few sets of pictures from Stanford Sierra Camp this year on Fallen Leaf Lake (near Lake Tahoe, California). We spend a lot of time on the lake wakeboarding, innertubing, fishing and just messing around. These are a couple of my favorite shots from on the water. Kevin wakeboarding - more air every year. This [...]

Air Rocket

Built from plans in Make Magazine with a couple mods. Made from a sprinkler valve and PVC (and of course duct tape!), compressed air fires the rocket high into the sky. Our rocket is make of the foam cylinders you wrap around hot water pipes (and duct tape!). It's connected directly to our air compressor [...]
