Ira Fay, an alum of the Carnegie Mellon Entertainment Technology Center and now a game developer at Pogo, during his presentation to our students. Delivering some good life advice before they get sucked into the working world.

Working with lighting again today. This shot is lit by a combination of candle and flash. I wanted to get a warm feeling from the scene and be able to see some detail in the flowers while still feeling the effect of the candle.
More details about the shot if you click through on the image to the flickr page.

Learning about lighting with an exercise from stobist.
The exercise is to vary the apparent light source size, leaving everything else the same. The image on the left was taken with the flash bounced off a 42″ umbrella about two feet away from the maglite, creating a huge apparent light source. The middle shot was the flash shining directly on the maglite from about 18″ away, creating a source that is small but still big enough to soften the shadow a bit. The image on the right was with the flash about 8 feet away, becoming close to a point source of light.
More details if you click on the image through to the flickr page.

The flower was placed on a flatbed scanner with black felt draped over it.
I was inspired by an exhibit at the San Francisco Botanical Gardens of Joanne Koltnow’s incredible work. She uses a backlit scanner (usually used for scanning transparencies) and prints on a special combination of paper and ink. Oh, and she has an artist’s eye. Her end results are stunning.
This image is nothing like the work Joanne does, but it is fun to try new techniques!

A bit distracted from photography today due to oral surgery, but I did manage to get some shots of the rain on our deck. I love the interference patterns in the ripples.

Someday I’ll run out of things in the house to photograph and will have to venture back out into the rain. Hopefully not this week.

Back to my music theme today. This is the first few channels of the Mackie 1402-VLZ that lives on my desk. It appreciated the cleaning it got after I looked at the first set of pictures I took.

Continuing to play with ideas for comic book styles derived from photographs. This one ended up going way beyond where I thought I was going, my ultimate goal is to be much more photographic than graphic.
