December 4, 2007 – Lava Lamps at Dusk

40°25’57.64″N 79°57’55.17″W
Part of Don Marinelli’s wonderful lava lamp collection at CMU’s Entertainment Technology Center. He and I were having a great conversation in his office at the end of the day, and I got distracted by this incredible view. Don was gracious enough to let me photogeek out for awhile.

December 3, 2007 – The Hotel Hop

40°26’56.21″N 79°56’3.27″W
After spending the day in a couple of planes I was really happy to finally make it to Pittsburgh., PA.

This shot was actually inspired by a Shawn White AMEX magazine ad where he is captured mid-air over his hotel room bed wearing his snowboard.

To get this shot I set up my Canon 10D on the floor with a 6 second exposure, and then had my Olympus SW770 fire its flash with its timer in the dark. I had to jump at the right time to get the shot. I didn’t want to use the on-camera flash because I wanted my shadow to help define the space, but I don’t yet have a separate flash unit – so the Olympus filled in.

Sorry about the goofy smile!

December 1, 2007 – Old World

We have one of those big internally lit globes. It has become an historical artifact. Two Germanys, the USSR, and other new world inaccuracies have left it a novelty.

A subset of my son’s archive of used drumsticks. He’s kinda rough on them.

November 22, 2007 – Old Barn Interior

Happy Thanksgiving!
These old bottles, valve and hinge live in an unused barn on my sister’s ranch. It’s a great place to explore both for grand vistas and more intimate scenes like this one.

November 17, 2007 – Flashlight Veggies

After shooting my Gibson guitar picture, I wanted to play around more with “light painting”, so I grabbed some veggies and headed down to the garage. This shot is a 20 second exposure in a blacked out room, lit with a small Maglite flashlight moving around to light the scene. This image is direct from the camera – completely unretouched, including brightness, contrast and color balance. Pretty cool.

November 13, 2007 – Small Chair or Giant Pumpkin

I built this Adirondack chair about 18 years ago when my first child was just an infant. It is the same as the other Adirondacks I’ve built, only all dimensions were halved, creating a chair less than two feet tall – perfect size for a one year old to sit in.

The chair now lives on our front porch, and offers seasonal respite for pumpkins instead of munchkins.

November 11, 2007 – The Kitchen Sink

More frozen water, this time taken with my Olympus point-and-shoot. The camera’s size allowed me to shoot from inside the kitchen sink (now I’ve shot everywhere!). Post-processed in Lightroom to get a more dramatic feel to the lighting.
