November 14, 2007 – Self Portrait on Escalator

34° 6’9.39″N 118°20’23.16″W
Taken on the escalator in the Hollywood & Highland Center (the shopping mall next to the Kodak Theater). The center art piece is this series of mirrors hanging under a grand piano suspended from the ceiling.

I rode the escalators a few times to get a good shot. This one was taken right before a security guard came and told me I couldn’t take pictures there. Clearly BS, as probably a thousand pictures are taken there every day. I asked her why not, and she said because I might take a picture of a security camera. Huh? I think they were really just getting creeped out by a lone guy going up and down the escalator over and over again late at night.

Fine, But Empty, Arts

One of the first pictures I took today with my new Tamron 11-18mm lens. I was able to capture just about the entire marquee of the now empty Fine Arts Theater from almost directly below the sign.

Scottsdale, AZ, in front of PF Chang’s. I like this crop on the image – the horse appears to have human-like shoulders.

November 7, 2007 – Grind and Glory Premiere

37°48’41.03″N 122°14’53.27″W
Grind and Glory, the documentary feature that we produced at Uth TV, premiered tonight at the Grand Lake Theater in Oakland. The screening was a fundraiser for Stop The Violence.

When I arrived, all the marquee said was “Grind and Glory”, and I thought that would be the perfect picture for today. By the time the film was over, the theater crew was already changing the signage back to their regular films, so I missed the opportunity to capture what I wanted. So instead I snapped this shot of the staffer replacing our film with “Bee Movie” from my old alma mater.

October 30, 2007 – Graffiti Pool

37°49’31.15″N 122°22’5.88″W
I visited Treasure Island today, a large portion of which is a deserted Naval station. The Olympic sized pool is now filled with graffiti rather than water.

October 23, 2007 – Gully Junk

A pile of twisted junk in a desert gully near Rancho Mirage, CA. It might have been a shopping cart, but there was a bed spring in it, too.

October 12, 2007 – Downtown Redwood City

37°29’8.07″N 122°13’45.09″W
I was in downtown Redwood City today for lunch and taking pictures. As I was framing this shot, I realized how much it looks like the shot of the Cantor Art Museum that I took three days ago – so I decided to see how close I could take it.
