February 19, 2008 – Bill Gates at Stanford

I saw Bill Gates speak at Stanford today. The image quality is crappy because I forgot to put the recharged battery back in my good camera. Doh. I took this with my Motorola RAZR, which I don’t recommend for anything.

February 10, 2008 – Anonymous Protester

Hanging out in LA before the VES Awards. A large number of protesters from the group “Anonymous” were finishing up their day.

I especially love this guy’s belt.

February 9, 2008 – Hollywood Blvd Heroes and Tourists

This is one of those shots that looks great on the camera’s LCD, then is kinda disappointing when you see it big. I like the subject matter and the framing, but at a 1/2 sec exposure without a tripod the blur is just too distracting.

Looking up at a tree in the parking lot of a shopping center tonight. One of the main lot lights is about 50 feet behind the tree, providing the rim light.

December 10, 2007 – All The World’s A Stage

This mural is in downtown Healdsburg, CA. At 9:30 at night the town is basically shut down except for the streetlights. I liked a lot of things about this scene when I came around the corner, starting with the streetlight seemingly lighting up their whole valley. The fire escape overhead makes the whole thing feel like a stage set with a catwalk above, even when you’re there. I also like the real tree on the left blending with the trunk in the mural, which along with the scale of the people helps blur the line between the mural and the “stage.”

I had a layover in Minneapolis flying home today. I’m glad I didn’t know the tarmac was frozen when we landed.

November 28, 2007 – Crouching Spider

“Crouching Spider” is a sculpture by Louise Bourgeois currently on display by the Ferry Building on the San Francisco waterfront. You can get some feeling for the scale of the piece from the photo, but it is quite stunning to stand next to it and be eye to eyes with a metallic arachnoid.
