January 29, 2008 – Candle and Flowers
Working with lighting again today. This shot is lit by a combination of candle and flash. I wanted to get a warm feeling from the scene and be able to see some detail in the flowers while still feeling the effect of the candle.
More details about the shot if you click through on the image to the flickr page.
January 28, 2008 – Lighting Lesson
Learning about lighting with an exercise from stobist.
The exercise is to vary the apparent light source size, leaving everything else the same. The image on the left was taken with the flash bounced off a 42″ umbrella about two feet away from the maglite, creating a huge apparent light source. The middle shot was the flash shining directly on the maglite from about 18″ away, creating a source that is small but still big enough to soften the shadow a bit. The image on the right was with the flash about 8 feet away, becoming close to a point source of light.

January 26, 2008 – Emergence
The flower was placed on a flatbed scanner with black felt draped over it.
I was inspired by an exhibit at the San Francisco Botanical Gardens of Joanne Koltnow’s incredible work. She uses a backlit scanner (usually used for scanning transparencies) and prints on a special combination of paper and ink. Oh, and she has an artist’s eye. Her end results are stunning.
This image is nothing like the work Joanne does, but it is fun to try new techniques!
