The Ferret Grave

There is a 112 mile strech of highway on I70 in Utah between Salina and Green River where there are no services available. The highway passes over a mountain range and is determined to get though it without interuption. About 30 miles from Salina at Exit 85 is a Rest Stop, the only relief along the way. We stopped there to let the dog stretch his legs and get some water.

As I  was walking him though the brush of the pet walk area, I noticed an odd rock pile.

An Odd Pile of Rocks

We walked over to it and read the inscription.

Here Lies The World's Best Ferret

Poor Y2K the Ferret was buried on the Fourth of July, just a week prior to our visit.

Why was Y2K buried here, at a rest stop, 30 miles from the last town and 82 miles to the next? Our theories include:
He died here while traveling with his owners.
He had a fondness for this rest stop, and his owners brought him here to rest in peace.
The freezer he was traveling in failed on the road and he had to be buried here.

Clearly there was some forethought here, as the traveling funeral processionists had the materials with them to prepare a nice headstone and gravesite.
